Going cuckoo for a clock

Today I picked up a cuckoo clock! Yes, it's December and I should be buying for others and not myself but I couldn't resist (and it's just so easy to find things for yourself, don't you reckon?!).

I've already hung the clock on my dining room wall with all my white picture frames. The photo above is of my Dad, taken in England before his family came out to Australia.

I love the white clock against the black (Dulux Domino). Ignore those empty frames. I do. To be honest I forget they need filling until I photograph that wall. Below is a shot from further back to give you a better idea of how it fits with the photo wall.

Now can you guess where I got this nifty, little clock? Aldi! I rarely go there but I always check out their catalogue because they sometimes have cool catalogue items for a limited time. The cuckoo clock was in store from today (check it out online here). By the time I got to my local store after work there was only one white clock left and four or five black ones.

Now in case you think I'm cuckoo for getting excited about a kitsch clock, I'm not the first for falling for this design in recent times. Cuckoo clocks have made a bit of a comeback in the past five years or so. Apartment Therapy has featured them (here) and Lady Melbourne even has one (here). They must be alright :)

  1. I remember as a child we used to have a cuckoo clock and this one is so stylish in white with the assortment of frames too. I popped over from Peach Macarons where you were nominated you for an award - Congratulations - I'm pleased to be following your lovely blog!

  2. I am so sad. I went to 3 different Aldi stores looking for the black one, with no luck! :(

Your white cuckoo clock does look amazing though!

    1. Oh, sad face :( Sorry to hear this. Aldi specials seem to walk out the door unfortunately. Hopefully you find another cuckoo clock that makes your heart sing.

  3. Hi there!
For Christmas I received the same clock, and I was wondering if you could please help me out with setting it up. I've read the instructions given over and over again, but I'm afraid I can't really understand them. The examples they gave about setting when the cuckoo comes out just didn't make any sense to me whatsoever, so I was hoping you might be able to tell me how to get it working.
I would like to figure out how to set it up so that it doesn't go off while I'm trying to sleep. I read in the instructions that there is a way to get it to go off only between the hours of 6am till 9pm, but no matter what I tried I couldn't get it to do that. Is there any chance you know how to set that up so that the cuckoo only comes out every hour between those hours (or maybe even make it 8am till 9pm instead)?
    Thank you, Ash.

  4. Hi Ash,
Those instructions were ridiculously hard to understand weren't they?! I was worried about the cuckoo making too much noise so I turned the volume right down. All I here is a slight mechanical sound as the bird comes out. Mine seems to come out every hours 24/7 - I couldn't work out how to get it off between 9pm and 6am either. Unfortunately, I threw out the instructions. Do you still have them? If you do, maybe you could email me. My husband in an electronics whizz so I can get him off the case if you've kept the leaflet!
    Cheers,
    Ellise

    1. They really were quite the pain, they made absolutely no sense.
I did keep the instructions however, where would you like me to send them? :)

    1. Hi Ellise, sorry for the late response. But things got very busy, very fast on my end. Anyway I won't bother filling you in on all of the very long, very boring details. So, now to the point - I'm writing this to tell you that I've (finally) sent the instructions to your email address!
      Thank you, Sam.

  6. Unfortunately, I too cannot find the instructions. I needed to change the batteries and now have no idea how to set it up again. I have scoured the internet and tried to get onto the product help page that was listed on the back of the clock, but to no avail. If anyone has the instructions still, could you please help me out?

  8. I love it. Despite the terrible instructions, it seems to work fine once you figure it out. The electronic cuckoo sound can be quite loud. I've turned mine right down and I just hear the little doors opening and the bird coming out o the hour. Not sure if this will disturb a sleeping child though. It won't do the cuckoo overnight though if you set it up.

  9. For anyone who is looking for the (very hard to understand)
instructions for the Aldi cuckoo clock, here they are:
    TIME SETTING
Insert 1 pc of P14 1.5 V battery into the battery compartment. Pay attention to the correct polarity. Positive (+) terminal must correspond with positive (+) marking on the clock.
To alter the hands carefully turn the minute hand to the current time.
Insert the remaining 2 pcs of P14 1.5 V batteries into the battery compartment. Pay attention to the correct polarity. Positive (+) terminal must correspond with positive (+) marking on the clock.
Then press the "ADJUST"-button, in order to set the times how often the Cuckoo shall come out: current time minus 5 times (movement default setting). 1st example: now it is 10:45 am, means that the cuckoo has to come out 10 times. So you will have to press the "ADJUST"-button 5 times (10 o'clock - 5, which is the movement default setting). 2nd example: now it is 5:30 pm, means that the cuckoo has to come out 5 times. In this case press the "ADJUST"-button 12 times (17 - 5).
The window will open and Cuckoo will push out and reporting 10 times (based on the 1st example, 10:45 am). When 11 o'clock is reached the Cuckoo will come out again and reporting 11 times.

    RESET:
If window opens and Cuckoo comes out after you have inserted the remaining 2 batteries, please press the "RESET"-button, this causes the report time to return to 6:00 am (default setting).
Then press the "ADJUST"-button 5 times (referring to above mentioned 1st example).

    Notes:
Hourly chime only in the time from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm.
The window opens automatically at hourly chime. The Cuckoo will jump out and talk "Cuckoo" at same time. After report time had ended, the Cuckoo returns and the window closes.
VOLUME-control dial can change the sound volume of the Cuckoo alarm.
